Book 25, Question 107

How do walls along highways block noise?

A noise barrier is a tall, thick wall that stands between a road and nearby homes.

Sound travels in straight lines, so the wall blocks the direct path, and some sound is absorbed or reflected back. The sound that does reach the homes is quieter. Walls work best when they are tall and without gaps. Earth mounds with trees can also help.
