What is under a city street?
Under a city street lie many hidden layers.
Large sewer pipes are often deepest, with water mains above them. Electric cables, telephone and fiber lines, and gas pipes lie nearer the surface. In some cities, subway tunnels and steam pipes share the space. Each system has its own depth and location. Maps and markings tell workers what is where.
