Book 25, Question 52
Why do water mains sometimes break?
Water pipes can last a very long time, but not forever.
They can rust, get old, or be pushed by moving soil. Very cold weather can make the ground freeze and shift, putting stress on pipes. When a main breaks, water bubbles out of the ground and may flood a street. Crews shut off nearby valves, dig down, and repair the pipe.
