Book 25, Question 52 · Video
Why do water mains sometimes break?
Water pipes can last a very long time, but not forever. They can rust, get old, or be pushed by moving soil. Very cold weather can make the ground freeze and shift, putting stress on pipes. When a main breaks, water bubbles out of the ground and may flood a street. Crews shut off nearby valves, dig down, and repair the pipe.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do water mains sometimes break?
The Big Idea
Sometimes water bubbles up out of a street! A water main has broken. Why does that happen?
Getting Old
Step one: Getting Old. Water pipes can last a very long time, but not forever. They can rust, get old, or be pushed by moving soil.
Cold Weather
Step two: Cold Weather. Very cold weather can make the ground freeze and shift. That puts stress on the pipes.
Repairs
Step three: Repairs. When a main breaks, water bubbles out of the ground and may flood a street. Crews shut off nearby valves, dig down, and repair the pipe.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Rust weakens pipes. Frost shifts the ground. The pipe cracks. Crews repair it.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Cold snaps cause more water main breaks. Stay away from flooded streets. Valves stop the water. Old pipes get replaced.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, fill a plastic bottle three-quarters full of water. Do not use glass. Put it in the freezer overnight. What happened to the bottle? How is this like a pipe in winter?
Outro
Water mains break because pipes get old, rust, or are pushed by moving soil, especially when frozen ground shifts in cold weather. Crews shut valves, dig, and repair them. Science is amazing!
