Book 24, Question 61
How long could the roots of one small plant stretch?
In the 1930s, a scientist carefully washed the soil from one winter rye plant that had grown for four months. He measured over 380 miles of root, and billions of tiny root hairs. That is a bit farther than the distance from Toronto to Montreal. The roots were so many and so fine that they filled a lot of soil.
