Book 24, Question 60
How do roots hold a hillside together?
Roots work like thousands of tiny ropes tying the soil together. They make a net that holds soil in place and helps rainwater soak in instead of rushing downhill. That keeps the soil from sliding or washing into streams. After a forest is cut or a bank is bare, the soil can slip away quickly.
