Book 24, Question 62
What is a mycorrhiza, the partnership between roots and fungus?
A mycorrhiza is a team-up between a plant root and a fungus. The fungus's threads wrap around or enter the root and spread far into the soil, reaching water and minerals like phosphorus that roots cannot reach. In return, the plant gives the fungus sugar that it makes using sunlight. About nine out of ten plant species form such partnerships.
