Why Is Corn a Seed, a Grain, and a Vegetable Depending on Talk?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is corn a seed, a grain, and a vegetable depending on talk?

The Big Idea

Corn can be a seed, a grain, and a vegetable because the words depend on how we use it! Botanically, a corn kernel is a seed. Cooks and farmers use different words for different jobs. Food words wear different hats.

Corn as a Veggie

Step one: corn as a vegetable. Fresh sweet corn on the cob is picked while soft and sugary. At dinner, we eat it like a vegetable.

Corn as a Grain

Step two: corn as a grain. Field corn is left to dry on the plant until the kernels are hard. Grains like these can be ground into cornmeal, flour, and tortillas.

Corn as a Seed

Step three: corn as a seed. Every kernel holds a baby corn plant. Plant one in warm soil, and it can grow into a tall stalk.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at corn's many hats! Sweet corn on the cob is a vegetable. Popcorn is a special dried kernel that pops. Tortillas come from corn that is ground into flour. And any kernel is a seed with a baby plant inside.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Food words wear different hats. Popcorn pops because water inside turns to steam and bursts the kernel. A cob of corn is the plant's seed stalk. Ask a grown-up to make popcorn, since heat and oil are hot.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! List the jobs corn does on a cob, in popcorn, and in a tortilla. Is it acting like a vegetable, a grain, or a seed? Draw a corn wearing three hats. Finally, draw your corn wearing three hats!
