Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do herbs smell strong when rubbed?

The Big Idea

Herbs smell strong when rubbed because rubbing breaks tiny oil bags in the leaf! Those oils are full of aroma molecules that float into the air and into your nose. It is like opening little perfume packets, and the smell tells you which herb you have.

Oil Glands

Step one: oil glands. The leaves of herbs like basil and mint have tiny glands filled with fragrant oil. These oils are called essential oils, and each herb has its own special recipe.

Rubbing Pops Them

Step two: rubbing pops them. When you gently rub or squish a leaf, the glands burst open. The oil spreads over the leaf, and its molecules escape into the air as a gas.

Smell Travels

Step three: the smell travels. Tiny aroma molecules float up to your nose and tickle smell sensors inside. Your brain compares the smell to ones it knows and says, that is basil, or mint, or rosemary!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at herbs! Basil smells sweet and peppery. Mint smells cool and fresh. Rosemary smells piney, like a little tree. And all of those aromas float through the air to you.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Essential oils are plant chemical messages. Plants use strong smells to keep hungry bugs from nibbling their leaves. Some smells also attract helpful pollinators. Only sniff herbs you know, and wash your hands after.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find a basil leaf. Sniff it first, then rub it gently and sniff again. How did the smell change? Smell it twice to feel the difference.

Outro

Rubbing herbs pops oil glands and releases aroma molecules. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
