Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is a tomato a fruit to scientists?

The Big Idea

A tomato is a fruit to scientists because of how it grows! In plant science, a fruit grows from a flower and holds seeds inside. A tomato does exactly that, even though cooks call it a vegetable.

It Starts as a Flower

Step one: it starts as a flower. A tomato plant makes small yellow flowers. After a bee visits, the flower's base swells and grows into the tomato.

Seeds Inside

Step two: seeds inside. Cut open a tomato, with a grown-up, and you see jelly and lots of tiny seeds. Botanists call anything that grows from a flower and holds seeds a fruit.

Kitchen Words

Step three: kitchen words. Cooks sort foods by flavor, so a savory tomato goes in the veggie group. Both names are right; one is for the lab and one is for the dinner table.

A Closer Look

Plenty of foods we call veggies are fruits. Let's look! A tomato has seeds inside and grew from a flower. A cucumber is a fruit too, and its seeds are in the middle. A bell pepper is a hollow fruit full of seeds. And an eggplant is a fruit with tiny seeds.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Kitchen words and plant words do not always match. Pumpkins, squash, and green beans are fruits to botanists. Rhubarb and celery stems are not fruits at all. Ask a grown-up to do the cutting.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Think of three foods that people call veggies. Ask, did it grow from a flower, and does it hold seeds? Then list the ones that are botanical fruits. Share your list of surprise fruits with a friend!

Outro

A tomato grows from a flower and holds seeds, so scientists call it a fruit. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
