Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do bananas ripen in a bag faster?

The Big Idea

Bananas ripen faster in a bag because they make a gas that tells fruit to ripen! The gas is called ethylene, and it floats out of the banana. A bag traps the gas close, so the fruit gets the message again and again.

A Ripening Gas

Step one: a ripening gas. Bananas, apples, and tomatoes release a gas called ethylene. It is a plant hormone, like a tiny megaphone telling fruit to get soft and sweet.

The Bag Traps It

Step two: the bag traps it. On the counter, the gas drifts away into the air. In a bag, the gas stays packed around the fruit, so the banana ripens faster.

Neighbors Ripen Too

Step three: neighbors join in. Ethylene from one banana can ripen other fruit nearby. That is why a ripe banana can help a hard avocado soften in a paper bag.

A Closer Look

Ethylene is the ripening megaphone, so let's take a closer look! First, the banana makes a little ethylene gas. Then the bag holds the gas in close. The fruit senses the signal and starts changing inside. So it turns soft, yellow, and sweet sooner.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A banana in a bag ripens faster than one in a bowl. A fridge slows ripening because cold slows the chemistry. Fruit stored near bananas may ripen too soon. Use a paper bag, and have a grown-up help. Never put a plastic bag over your head.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, put one banana in a paper bag and leave one out. Look at both the next day. Which one changed more, and why? Then explain why the bag made a difference.

Outro

A bag traps ethylene, the ripening gas, so bananas ripen faster. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
