Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does milk calm a spicy mouth better than water?

The Big Idea

Milk calms a spicy mouth better than water because the spicy chemical dissolves in fat, not water! Milk has fat and a protein that bind that chemical and wash it away. Water just spreads it around.

Spicy Chemical

Step one: chili peppers have capsaicin, kap-SAY-ih-sin. That chemical is what makes chili peppers spicy. It tricks your nerves into feeling heat, even though nothing is hot.

Water Fails

Step two: water can't dissolve it. Capsaicin does not dissolve in water, just like oil does not. A sip of water only spreads the spicy chemical around your mouth.

Milk Wins

Step three: milk carries it off. Milk contains fat that dissolves capsaicin, and a protein called casein that grabs it. Together they lift the spice off your nerves, and you swallow it away.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A chili pepper holds a spicy chemical. Water cannot wash that chemical away. Milk's fat and protein grab it. And your mouth feels calmer.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Yogurt, ice cream, and cheese help calm spice too. Bread and rice can also soak up some spicy oil. Birds do not feel capsaicin, so they spread chili seeds. Wash your hands after touching chilies, and keep your hands away from your eyes.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, take a mild spicy bite. Compare how a sip of milk and a sip of water feel. Skip it if you do not like spicy foods. Never rub your eyes after touching chilies.

Fat, not water, washes chili away. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
