What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is the ‘tongue map’ a myth?
The Big Idea
The tongue map is a myth because every part of your tongue can taste every taste! Sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami receptors are scattered all around. Some spots have a few more, but no spot is only for one taste.
Old Idea
Step one: where the myth began. Over a century ago, a scientist measured small differences in taste on the tongue. Later, the small differences were drawn as big zones on a map in schoolbooks.
Taste Buds
Step two: taste buds are everywhere. Your tongue has thousands of taste buds, and each bud has many tiny taste cells. Each bud can sense several basic tastes, not just one.
A Little Different
Step three: tiny differences exist. Some areas may be a little more sensitive to certain tastes. But they are small, so every region can taste sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Your tongue is covered in tiny bumps. Taste buds are spread over the whole tongue. Sweet can be tasted at the tip and the sides. Sour can be tasted in many places too.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The tongue map showed up in books for many years. Modern research found taste receptors on the whole tongue. Taste cells are replaced every one to two weeks. Only taste foods that a grown-up has said are okay.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, dissolve a little sugar in water. Touch a drop to the tip of your tongue, then to the side. Both places can taste sweet. Use clean, safe food items only.
