Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the fizzy mix of baking soda and vinegar get cold?
The Big Idea
The fizzy mix of baking soda and vinegar gets cold because the reaction soaks up heat! As it makes carbon dioxide gas, it pulls warmth from the liquid. Not all reactions give off heat. Some take it in!
Mix Them
Step one: baking soda meets vinegar. Baking soda is a base, and vinegar is an acid. When they meet, they react and make bubbles right away.
Gas Forms
Step two: a new gas appears. The bubbles are carbon dioxide gas, the same gas in fizzy drinks. The reaction also makes water and a salt called sodium acetate.
Heat Soaked Up
Step three: the reaction needs energy. To break and build its parts, it takes heat from the liquid. That makes the mixture and the cup feel cooler.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Baking soda is a base. Vinegar is a mild acid. Together they fizz and make gas. And the cup feels cooler as heat is soaked up.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A reaction that soaks up heat is called endothermic, en-doh-THUR-mik. Instant cold packs for sports injuries use the same idea. Hand warmers do the opposite and give off heat. Do this in the sink with a grown-up, and do not taste it.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, mix two tablespoons of baking soda and half a cup of vinegar in a cup in the sink. Feel the outside of the cup. Does it feel cooler? Do not taste it.
Outro
Some reactions soak up heat instead of giving it off. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
