Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some meteors blaze into fireballs?

The Big Idea

Some meteors blaze into fireballs because the space rock is bigger than most! Pea-sized and bigger rocks heat the air so strongly that they flare brighter than planets. Sometimes you can even hear a boom. Those bright meteors are called fireballs.

Most Are Tiny

Step one: most meteors are tiny. A typical meteor is just a grain of sand or a pebble from space. It makes a quick, faint streak as it burns up. Those are the shooting stars you may see.

Bigger Rocks

Step two: a few rocks are bigger. A rock the size of a pea or larger can rush into the air at an enormous speed. It squeezes and heats the air in front of it so much that the air glows. More air heated means more light.

Fireball Flash

Step three: the streak flares into a fireball. It can shine brighter than the planets, and sometimes it breaks apart with a sound you can hear. Fireballs are rare, so seeing one is special.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Most meteors are sand-grain sized. A pea-sized rock makes a brighter streak. The air around it glows hot. Sometimes you can even hear a boom.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Most meteors are sand-grain sized. Fireballs are the rare giants. Some fireballs make a sound. Meteorites are space rocks that land.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look up a recent fireball report. Note its time and direction. Could you have seen it from your home? Tell a grown-up what you found.

Outro

A fireball is a rare, bright gift from space. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
