Why Would a Trip to Mars Take Months?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why would a trip to Mars take months?

The Big Idea

A trip to Mars would take months because Mars is very, very far away! A trip takes about seven months each way, and crews might wait over a year for the planets to line up for home. They would need air, water, food, and protection from radiation. Dreams need engineering.

A Long Way

Step one: Mars is a long way off. Even at its closest, Mars is tens of millions of kilometers from Earth. Spaceships travel fast, but the distance is huge. The trip takes about seven months each way.

Planets Keep Moving

Step two: both planets keep moving. Earth and Mars both circle the Sun, so a spaceship doesn't fly straight to Mars. It follows a curved path to meet it. Waiting for the right moment saves fuel.

Waiting to Come Home

Step three: the crew might wait over a year for the trip home. The planets must line up again for a good return path. Until then, the crew lives and works on Mars. A whole mission may last about 500 days.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at what a crew needs! They need clean air to breathe. They need water to drink and grow food. They need food for a very long trip. And they need a shield from space radiation.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A trip takes about seven months each way. Crews might wait over a year for the planets to line up. Messages take minutes to travel between Earth and Mars. Engineers are still solving these problems.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Write a packing list for a 500-day Mars crew. Include food, fun, and fixes. What would you bring for fun? Share your list with a grown-up.
