Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do astronauts sleep in sleeping bags clipped to walls?

The Big Idea

Astronauts sleep in sleeping bags clipped to walls because you can't really lie down without gravity! The bags keep sleepers from drifting into instruments in the middle of a dream. In orbit, any wall can be a bed. Sleep safely, floating style, with no pillow needed!

No Up or Down

Step one: no up or down. On Earth, gravity presses you onto your mattress. In orbit, you float, so there is no lying down at all.

Sleeping Bags

Step two: sleeping bags. Astronauts zip into bags that are fixed to a wall, floor, or ceiling. The wall is a bed in any direction, because up and down do not matter.

Staying Put

Step three: safe sleeping. Without the bag, arms and legs would float and bump buttons or equipment. Many astronauts also wear eye masks and earplugs, because the station is bright and noisy, with fans humming all the time.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a sleep station! A sleeping bag holds the sleeper. Clips fix it to the wall. An eye mask blocks the light. And earplugs help block the noise of fans!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The station sees 16 sunrises and sunsets every day. Astronauts sleep about 8 hours a night. Sleepers' arms float up in front of them. Sleep stays on a schedule set by mission control.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Try reading while lying on your side, then on your back. Notice how the position changes how it feels. Astronauts feel orientation differently in space. Which way is up when you float?
