Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do rockets rise slowly at first and then speed up?
The Big Idea
Rockets rise slowly at first because they are very heavy when they are full of fuel! At liftoff, a rocket's engines barely beat gravity. As fuel burns away, the rocket gets lighter, and the same push makes it speed up faster. Lighter means quicker.
Heavy at the Start
Step one: a rocket starts out heavy. Most of a rocket's weight at liftoff is fuel. The engines have to push all that weight against gravity. So it lifts off slowly.
Burning Fuel
Step two: the engines burn fuel nonstop. Every second, tons of fuel burn and shoot out the back. That makes the rocket lighter and lighter. Empty tanks are dropped, too.
Faster and Faster
Step three: the same push moves less weight. When something is lighter, the same push speeds it up more. The rocket climbs faster and faster. Soon it zooms toward space.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! At liftoff, the tanks are full. Burning fuel makes the rocket lighter. A lighter rocket speeds up faster. The climb gets quicker and quicker.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Most of a rocket's weight at liftoff is fuel. Engines push harder than gravity pulls. Rockets drop empty parts as they climb. A launch is a team effort.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Watch a launch video with a grown-up. Time how long the rocket takes to clear the tower. Notice how it speeds up. Tell a grown-up what you saw.
Outro
A heavy rocket starts slowly, then flies faster as it gets lighter. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
