Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter?

The Big Idea

The asteroid belt sits between Mars and Jupiter because leftover rocky pieces there never grew into a full planet. Jupiter's strong gravity stirred the region and kept them apart. Today they orbit as a scattered crowd of rocks. It isn't a solid ring you could walk on!

Leftover Rocks

Step one: leftover rocks. About 4.6 billion years ago, a cloud of gas and dust formed the Sun and planets. In the asteroid belt, the rocks never gathered into one world.

Jupiter's Pull

Step two: Jupiter's gravity. Jupiter is the heaviest planet, and its gravity tugged on the rocks over and over. That stirring kept them speeding past each other, rather than sticking together.

A Rocky Crowd

Step three: a scattered crowd. The belt has millions of asteroids, but they're spread out across huge distances. Spacecraft have flown through it safely many times.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the belt! Mars is on the inner side. The asteroid belt is a wide zone of rocks. Jupiter is on the outer side, with its mighty pull. And Ceres is the biggest object inside the belt!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! All the asteroids put together weigh less than our Moon. Ceres is a dwarf planet about 940 kilometres wide. Asteroids can be tiny pebbles or hundreds of kilometres across. Probes like Dawn visited the belt up close.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Name one famous asteroid. Ceres is a great choice, and it's also a dwarf planet! Try Vesta or Bennu, too. Draw where the belt sits between Mars and Jupiter.
