Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some planets have dozens of moons?

The Big Idea

Some planets have dozens of moons because strong gravity can capture passing objects, and it can also keep leftover pieces from the planet's formation circling nearby. Giant planets are heavy, so they have lots of pull, and lots of room around them. They won the moon jackpot!

Strong Gravity

Step one: strong gravity. The more mass a planet has, the stronger its gravity pulls on things nearby. Jupiter has more than 300 times the mass of Earth, so its pull is mighty.

Capturing Rocks

Step two: capturing objects. Asteroids and icy bodies sometimes drift close to a giant planet. Its gravity can grab them, and they become small moons that circle it. Many of Jupiter's smaller moons began that way.

Leftover Pieces

Step three: leftover material. When giant planets formed, rings and discs of gas and dust swirled around them. Some of that material clumped together into big moons, like Jupiter's four largest.

A Closer Look

Let's count some moons! Earth has just one big Moon. Jupiter has more than 100 known moons. Saturn has more than 280 known moons. Neptune has 16, and the count keeps changing as we discover more!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Jupiter's moon Ganymede is bigger than Mercury. Saturn's moon Titan has thick air and lakes of liquid methane. Mercury and Venus have no moons at all. New moons are discovered as telescopes get better, so the numbers keep growing.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Make a chart of planets and their moons. Earth has 1, and Jupiter has more than 100. Ask a grown-up to look up two more. Which planet has the most moons?
