Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the Moon look bright if its rock is as dark as old pavement?
The Big Idea
The Moon looks bright because it is lit by the Sun, and the night sky around it is dark! The Moon's rock reflects only about 12 percent of the sunlight that hits it, a bit like worn asphalt. Against the black sky, it still looks brilliant. Moonlight is recycled sunlight.
Sunlight Hits the Moon
Step one: sunlight shines on the Moon. The Sun lights up half of the Moon all the time. Even a little reflected light from all that surface adds up. The Moon makes no light of its own.
A Little Bounces Back
Step two: the dark rock bounces back a little light. The Moon reflects only about 12 percent of the sunlight that hits it. That is a lot like old, worn pavement. Most of the light is soaked into the dark soil.
Dark Sky Makes It Pop
Step three: the black sky makes the Moon pop. Against a dark background, even a dim object looks very bright. Our eyes at night also see the Moon as silvery. A pavement-gray ball becomes a glowing lantern.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Sunlight lands on the dark Moon soil. A small part bounces off. That light travels to Earth. And your eyes see it glowing against the black sky.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The Moon reflects about 12 percent of sunlight. Moonlight takes about one second to reach Earth. Contrast makes the Moon look bright. Never look at the Sun through binoculars.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! In a dim room, shine a flashlight on white paper. Then shine it on dark gray paper. Which one reflects more light? Tell a grown-up what you learned.
