Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do calendars sometimes have a ‘Blue Moon’?
The Big Idea
A Blue Moon is not really blue! It often means the second full Moon in one calendar month. The name is about timing, not colour. Blue Moon is a rare full-Moon timing label!
Moon Cycle
Step one: the Moon cycle. The Moon goes from full to full in about 29 and a half days. That is a little shorter than most months on our calendar.
Calendar Months
Step two: the calendar months. Most months have 30 or 31 days, so they are slightly longer than the Moon cycle. Sometimes two full Moons fit into a single month.
The Second One
Step three: the second full Moon. When that happens, the second full Moon of the month is called a Blue Moon. It happens about once every two or three years.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A full Moon happens early in the month. A month of 30 or 31 days is just long enough. Another full Moon shows up near the end. That second one is called the Blue Moon.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Once in a blue Moon means something that is very rare. The Moon doesn't turn blue, and it looks the same as any full Moon. Smoke or dust in the air can sometimes make the Moon look bluish. Watch the Moon with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Check a calendar to see if this year has a Blue Moon month. Ask a grown-up to help you look it up. Count the full Moons in each month. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
Outro
A Blue Moon is a timing label, not a colour. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
