Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the Moon have craters?

The Big Idea

The Moon has craters because asteroids and comets smashed into it for billions of years! With almost no air or weather to erase the scars, craters stay as cosmic footprints. The Moon is a permanent crater museum!

Space Crashes

Step one: rocks crash in. Asteroids and comets zoom through space and sometimes hit the Moon. They hit at tremendous speed, much faster than a speeding bullet, so the blast is enormous.

Bowl-Shaped Holes

Step two: a crater forms. Each crash blasts out a round, bowl-shaped hole, even if the rock came in at a slant. Bits of rock fly out and make bright rays around the crater.

Nothing Erases Them

Step three: craters last. On Earth, wind, rain, and plants wear craters away. The Moon has almost no air or weather, so craters stay for billions of years.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A space rock zooms in. It crashes into the Moon with a huge blast. The blast carves out a crater. With no weather, the Moon keeps its craters like a museum.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Moon has millions of craters, big and small. The biggest crater, the South Pole-Aitken basin, is about 2,500 kilometres wide. Tycho is a famous crater with bright rays. Never look at the Sun with binoculars. Moon watch with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, use binoculars on the Moon at night, never the Sun. Count the big dark seas and the bright crater rays. Which ones can you find? Draw your favourite crater. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
