Why Are Solar Eclipses Rarer to See From Your Town?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are solar eclipses rarer to see from your town?

The Big Idea

Total solar eclipses are rare in any one town because the Moon's shadow on Earth is a small, moving bull's-eye! Only people inside that narrow path see a total eclipse. Most places miss it. The Moon's shadow is a narrow ticket!

The Moon Blocks

Step one: the Moon blocks the Sun. In a solar eclipse, the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun. It's the same apparent size as the Sun, so it can cover it exactly.

A Small Shadow

Step two: the shadow is small. The Moon is small, so its darkest shadow is only about 100 to 250 kilometres wide. That is a tiny dot on the big Earth.

The Path Moves

Step three: the shadow races. As Earth turns and the Moon moves, the shadow sweeps across the planet in a long thin strip. Only people along that path see the total eclipse.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The Sun shines, huge and bright. The Moon passes in front of it. Its shadow makes a small dark spot. Only people in that path see a total eclipse.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Total eclipses happen somewhere on Earth about every 18 months. Totality in one place lasts at most about seven and a half minutes. Never look at the Sun, even during an eclipse, without certified eclipse glasses. Always use certified eclipse glasses with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Never stare at the Sun. Instead, learn about safe eclipse glasses with a grown-up. Certified glasses are the only safe way to look, and regular sunglasses are not enough. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
