Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why never play in drainage ditches after rain?

The Big Idea

A ditch after a rainstorm might look like a fun place to splash. It is not safe! Ditches collect lots of rain very quickly, and the water can move fast, with hidden currents underneath. Kids can be swept off their feet in seconds, and that is why we never play in them!

Rain Collects

Step one: rain collects. Rain runs downhill and gathers in ditches, creeks, and drains. They can fill up in minutes.

Currents Hide

Step two: currents hide. Moving water is much stronger than it looks, and the bottom is slippery. Even a few inches of fast water can knock a person off their feet.

Choose High Ground

Step three: choose high ground. After storms, play in dry places away from water. If you see rising water, walk away and tell a grown-up.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at why ditches are risky! Lots of water arrives fast. The flow can pull you down. Deep spots and trash can hide. Safer, drier places to play. Flood water can also be dirty and can hide dangers like sharp objects. A helpful rule is: turn around, don't drown. Water also hides how deep it is, and the banks can crumble. It is always best to stay far away and let grown-ups handle anything near fast water.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Fast water is much stronger than it looks. A few inches of moving water can knock you off your feet. Storm drains and culverts can pull you in. Tell a grown-up if you see rising water.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's choose safe places. Draw a map of your neighborhood with a grown-up. Mark ditches, creeks, and drains. Mark safe, high-ground playgrounds. Never go near rushing water.

Outro

After rain, stay out of the water and play on high ground. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
