Why Drink Water on Hot, Humid Days?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why drink water on hot, humid days?

The Big Idea

On a hot, sticky day, your body works extra hard to stay cool. It sweats, and that sweat is mostly water that leaves your body. Drinking water replaces what you lose and helps you feel well, and that is why we drink water on hot, humid days!

Body Heats Up

Step one: the body heats up. When the air is hot, your body warms up and needs a way to cool down. Humid air is full of water vapor, which makes the heat feel heavier.

Sweat Cools You

Step two: sweat cools you. Sweat cools you as it dries, but in humid air it dries slowly. So your body sweats even more, and loses lots of water.

Water Refills You

Step three: water refills you. Your body needs water to keep sweating and to think clearly. Sipping often helps you feel strong and alert.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at heat safety! Heat warms your body. Your body releases water. Sip water steadily. Rest in cool, shady spots. Tell a grown-up if you feel dizzy, sick, or very tired, because those can be signs that you are too hot. Move to a cool place, rest, and sip water. During a heat advisory, plan outdoor play for the cooler morning or evening.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sweat is mostly water that you need back. Humid air slows how fast sweat dries. Sip water often, even before you feel thirsty. Never stay in a parked car on a hot day.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's stay cool and safe. Sip water on a schedule in the heat. Take breaks in the shade or indoors. Wear light clothes and a hat. Say so if you feel dizzy or sick.
