Intro
Hey, sky watchers! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does the sky turn greenish before some storms?
The Big Idea
Sometimes the sky turns an eerie green before a strong storm. Huge, thick storm clouds scatter sunlight in odd ways, and that can tint the sky greenish. It is a clue that something strong is brewing, so it is time to pay attention.
Sunlight Shines In
Step one: sunlight arrives. Sunlight looks white, but it is really a mix of all the colors of the rainbow. Late in the day, the light turns more red and orange.
Thick Clouds Scatter It
Step two: giant clouds scatter the light. A strong storm cloud can tower miles high, full of water droplets and ice. It scatters a lot of blue light. Light that goes through it comes out with a bluish tint.
Blue Plus Gold Is Green
Step three: the colors mix. Bluish light from the storm mixes with the golden light of a low Sun, and your eyes see green. That is why a green sky often shows up in the late afternoon.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a green sky! A low Sun sends golden light across the land. A tall storm cloud adds blue light. Together, they make the greenish glow that tells us to pay attention.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A green sky does not guarantee a tornado, and tornadoes can happen without it. It can come before strong winds, big hail, or very heavy rain. Official weather alerts are the best guide, so a grown-up should check them. If the sky looks eerie, go inside and stay away from windows.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Be a sky detective, and notice the colors in the clouds from a safe spot. Ask a grown-up to check the weather alerts. If the sky looks eerie, go inside and stay away from windows. Then ask: why would blue light plus golden light look green?
