Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do storm names get retired?

The Big Idea

Strong storms get names so people can talk about them quickly and clearly. If a storm causes terrible damage, its name is retired out of respect, like retiring a sports jersey. That way, the name is never used for another storm.

Names Are Picked

Step one: names are chosen ahead of time. Weather experts keep lists of names in alphabetical order. Each year, the next storm gets the next name on the list. The Atlantic lists repeat every 6 years.

A Storm Does Great Harm

Step two: a storm causes terrible damage. Once in a while, a storm hurts a lot of people or destroys many homes. People then remember that name for a long, long time.

The Name Retires

Step three: the name is retired. An international weather committee votes, and the name is taken off the list for good. A new name with the same first letter replaces it.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at storm names! The list holds the names in alphabetical order. A retired name is crossed off and never used again. And a replacement name joins the list in its place.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Using names makes warnings short, clear, and easy to remember. Names that are not retired come back every 6 years in the Atlantic. A retired name is replaced with a new name that starts with the same letter. Retiring a name shows respect for the people who were hurt.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, find a list of retired storm names online. Look at the names and the years they were retired. Write down what you notice. Then ask: why is retiring a name a way to show respect?
