Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do clouds sometimes look like animals?
The Big Idea
When you see a cloud shaped like a dragon, your brain is doing something clever. Brains love finding faces and animals in random shapes. This is called pareidolia. Clouds are perfect inkblots in the sky.
Clouds Make Random Shapes
Step one: clouds make random shapes. Wind and rising air push clouds into big, lumpy forms. Nobody plans the shapes. They just happen, as warm air rises and cool air sinks.
Your Brain Hunts for Patterns
Step two: your brain hunts for patterns. Humans are very good at spotting faces, which helps us know who is around. Your brain tries to match any shape it sees to something it already knows.
You See an Animal
Step three: you see an animal. Your brain fills in the missing details, and the lumpy cloud becomes a dragon, a rabbit, or an elephant. Another person might see something completely different.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at cloud animals! A random cloud is just water droplets in a lumpy shape. Your pattern finder is your brain's talent for matching shapes. And the cloud animal is the picture your mind creates.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! People also see faces in the Moon, in wood grain, and even on toast. Seeing a dragon does not mean there is a dragon cloud. The shapes change as the wind moves the cloud around. Cloud watching is a free activity that works anywhere there is sky.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Play cloud zoo for five minutes with a friend. Each of you points out an animal you see. Does your friend see the same animal? Then switch and describe a different cloud. Remember to sit in a safe spot, and never look at the Sun.
