Intro
Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does frost paint windows?
The Big Idea
On very cold mornings, windows can wake up covered in ferny, feathery patterns. That is frost, and it is made by invisible water vapor in the air. The vapor turns straight into ice crystals on the cold glass.
The Glass Gets Very Cold
Step one: the glass gets very cold. On a freezing night, the outside air chills a window until its surface drops below zero degrees Celsius. Cold glass chills the air that touches it.
Vapor Meets the Glass
Step two: vapor meets the glass. Water vapor in the air touches the freezing surface. It skips the liquid stage and turns straight into tiny ice crystals, a change called deposition.
Crystals Grow Ferns
Step three: crystals grow ferny branches. Each crystal gives the next bits of vapor a place to land and freeze. Tiny scratches and dust shape the pattern, so you get delicate feathers and ferns.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at frost! Cold glass is the surface where it all begins. Water vapor is the invisible gas that lands and freezes. And the ice ferns are the beautiful patterns that grow.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Frost art needs a cold surface, colder than freezing. Frost forms on the inside of single-pane windows when the room air is damp. Frost can also coat grass, car windshields, and spider webs on cold, clear nights, and it melts when the Sun warms things up. Never lick or touch icy metal, since it can stick to your skin.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! On a frosty morning, find a window with frost patterns. Photograph the pattern from the indoor side. Zoom in close to see the ferns. Then sketch it, and ask why it looks a bit like a fern or a feather.

Frost is the winter's own art, drawn in ice from invisible air. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
