Intro
Hello, ocean explorers! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do currents move like rivers in the sea?
The Big Idea
An ocean current is like a river with no banks. It's a huge stream of water that flows through the sea. Wind pushes the surface, Earth's spin bends the path, and warm and cold water help drive the flow. Together they make giant moving roads!
Step 1
Step one: wind drags the surface. Winds that blow steadily in the same direction pull the top layer of the ocean along with them.
Step 2
Step two: Earth's spin bends the path. As Earth turns, moving water curves instead of going straight. In the north, it bends to the right. Cold, salty water also sinks and drives deep currents.
Step 3
Step three: land turns the flow. When a current hits a continent, it can't go through, so it turns and follows the coast. Together, these forces make a steady river of sea!
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at what steers a current! Wind pushes the water at the surface. Earth's spin bends the path. And warm and cold water change how heavy the water is, which also helps move it.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A message in a bottle can ride a current for months. Deep currents can be driven by cold, salty water sinking. You can learn about currents by looking at current maps with a grown-up. Please don't toss bottles into the sea, because they become litter.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Why isn't the whole ocean one still bathtub? What three forces steer a current? With a grown-up, blow gently across a bowl of water and watch the surface move.
Outro
Ocean rivers have no shores, but they still have paths. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
