Intro
Welcome aboard, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is there a dead zone in some coastal water?
The Big Idea
A dead zone is a patch of water with too little oxygen for most animals to live in. Extra nutrients from farms and cities can cause a feast of algae. But when the algae die and rot, tiny bacteria use up the oxygen! Fish and crabs have to swim away.
Step 1
Step one: nutrients wash to the sea. Rain washes extra fertilizer and waste off land and into rivers, which carry it to the coast.
Step 2
Step two: algae bloom, then die. With so much food, tiny algae grow into a huge bloom. When the bloom dies, it sinks to the bottom.
Step 3
Step three: bacteria use up the oxygen. Bacteria eat the dead algae, and as they do, they use up the oxygen in the water. Fish and crabs flee, and animals that can't move may not survive.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at how a dead zone is layered! The river plume is the stream of fresh, nutrient-rich water flowing out to sea. The bloom is the thick layer of algae growing near the surface. And the low-oxygen bottom is where the water has too little air for animals.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Warm, still layers of water trap low-oxygen water near the bottom. The Gulf of Mexico has a famous dead zone every summer, fed by the Mississippi River. Cutting extra fertilizer and waste helps more than one beach cleanup. Low oxygen is not a kid experiment. Watch news maps of it with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Why does a feast become a shortage? What season do you think makes a dead zone grow? Try this: with a grown-up, look up a map of a dead zone.
Outro
A dead zone shows us that what happens on land reaches the sea. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
