Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do Christmas-tree worms vanish?

The Big Idea

Those little colorful trees on a Christmas-tree worm are really its gills and feeding fans. The worm lives safely in a tube in the coral. If a shadow or ripple says danger, it zips back inside in a flash!

The Gills Fan Out

Step one: the gills fan out. The worm opens two colorful spirals that look like little trees. They help it breathe and catch food.

A Shadow Falls

Step two: a shadow falls. The worm can sense a sudden shadow or ripple. That could mean a hungry fish is near!

The Worm Yanks In

Step three: the worm yanks in. In a flash, it pulls the spirals into its hard tube. The hole looks empty, and a fast hide beats being a snack!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a Christmas-tree worm! The twin spirals are the gills that look like little trees. The tube in the coral is the worm's safe bunker. And the retracted worm is hiding deep inside. Patience brings them back out!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The two spirals look like holiday trees stuck on the reef. The worm's body stays hidden inside a hard tube that it builds in the coral. If you stay still and wait, they usually come back out. Don't tap the coral to make them vanish. Watch from a float.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about hiding. Why does the worm hide its gills first? What clue says danger is coming? Wave your hand over a friend's head, gently. Do they notice the shadow? Remember, poking does not help science.

Outro

A vanishing tree is a shy worm with a fast door. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
