Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some snails have bright colors on a reef?

The Big Idea

Reef snails like cone snails and cowries can have bold, bright patterns. Sometimes the colors help the snail hide, which is called camouflage. Other times the colors are a keep-away sign, warning hunters that this snail is not a good meal.

The Snail Wears a Pattern

Step one: the snail wears a pattern. Some patterns blend into the busy colors of a reef. Others stand out loudly.

A Hunter Sees the Color

Step two: a hunter sees the color. A hunting fish may not even notice a hidden snail. Or it may remember a bright pattern from a bad experience.

The Hunter Passes By

Step three: the hunter passes by. The snail was hidden, or it was a warning, so the hunter swims away. The snail goes on grazing!

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a reef snail! The shell pattern can hide the snail or send a warning. The foot is the muscle that the snail glides on. And the reef background is what the snail may blend into. Reef fashion can be camouflage or a keep-away sign!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Cone snails have a tiny harpoon-like tooth that they use to hunt. Some cone snails have venom that can hurt people, so never pick up a live cone shell. Hunters can learn from mistakes, and that helps the next snail with that pattern. Leave live shells on the reef, and collect empty shells only if a grown-up says it is okay.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Let's think about colors. When might bright colors help hide a snail? And when might they work as a warning instead? Draw a snail with a camouflage pattern, and another with a warning pattern. Remember, look but do not pocket live shells.
