Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do birds follow the tide line?

The Big Idea

When the water falls, it uncovers snacks like worms, tiny clams, and leftover bits. Birds walk the wet stripe like a moving buffet. Each tide sets a new table. That is why you often see sandpipers running to and fro at the edge of the waves.

High Tide Hides the Sand

Step one: high tide hides the sand. At high tide, the sea covers the beach. Worms and clams stay safe under the sand. Falling water leaves the sand soft and wet, so small animals are easier to find.

The Water Falls

Step two: the water falls. As the sea backs away, wet sand is uncovered. Tiny animals come out, or can be found just beneath the surface. Birds with long beaks probe deep, while birds with short beaks pick food from the top.

Birds Move to the Wet Line

Step three: birds move to the wet line. They run along the edge, picking out food. Then the next tide resets the table, and they follow it again.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the tide line! The falling tide uncovers the sand. The wet stripe is full of food. A hidden clam waits under the sand. And a shorebird hunts along the edge.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Give nesting birds extra space. Stay off posted dunes. A sandpiper's busy feet are a hunting pattern, not random dancing. Watch the flock. Do not run at it.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Watch the birds from a distance with a grown-up. Draw where the tide line is. Check again in an hour and see where the birds are. Why is the wet stripe richer than dry sand? Scientists watch quietly and take notes. Happy exploring!

Outro

The tide line is a moving table, and the birds read the menu! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
