Intro

Hey there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is the horizon a straight line?

The Big Idea

Earth is huge and curved. From the beach, you only see a tiny slice of that curve. So the far edge of the water looks like a straight line. That is why a ship seems to sink slowly into the sea as it sails away.

Earth Is a Giant Ball

Step one: Earth is a giant ball. Our planet is about 8,000 miles across. That is far bigger than you can see at once. Picture an ant on a basketball. To the ant, the ground looks flat.

You See One Tiny Patch

Step two: you see one tiny patch. From the shore, your eyes see only a very short arc. A short piece of a big circle looks almost flat. Sailors have known for a very long time that ships disappear bottom-first over the curve.

A Ship Hides Hull First

Step three: a ship hides hull first. As a ship sails away, Earth's curve hides its bottom first. The top of the ship stays in view the longest.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the horizon! The viewer stands on the beach. The water's edge looks perfectly straight. And the ship's hull is hiding behind the curve.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Binoculars make it easier to notice the ship dropping away. From a higher place, you can see farther. Do not look at the Sun, even through binoculars. The straight look is a close-up trick, not proof of a flat world.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look at a ball and imagine being as small as an ant. Put a sticker on the ball and look at it up close. Does your patch look flat? Why would a higher dune show a farther ship? Scientists use models to explain big things. Happy exploring!
