A Tiny Slice! Why Is Your Life a Small Part of Earth Time?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is your life a tiny slice of Earth time?

The Big Idea

Earth is very, very old, and one human life is a blink on its long line. Earth is about 4.5 billion years old. A long life is about 100 years. But the blink still matters, because it's yours!

Step 1

Step 1: draw a long Earth line. Let one long line stand for all of Earth's story, about 4.5 billion years. Some canyon rocks hold a big part of that story.

Step 2

Step 2: mark your birth. Put a dot at the very end of the line, where your life started. It has to be very close to the end, because Earth is so much older than you.

Step 3

Step 3: mark today, and see the short gap. Put a second dot for today. If you are 9, the dots are 9 years apart. On a line for 4.5 billion years, that gap is too small to see. But it's real!

A Closer Look

Let's look at the Earth line. The long brown bar is all of Earth's time. The tiny red sliver at the end is your life. And the canyon layers show how much time is really stacked up below.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Dinosaurs lived about 230 to 66 million years ago, long before people. Some rocks in the Grand Canyon are almost 2 billion years old. You share this planet with rocks much older than dinosaurs. Scale keeps wonder honest. You can love the tiny blink and the huge canyon.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask: what can a short life still measure well? And ask: why does a tiny slice still get a notebook? Try it at home: draw a line across a long paper for Earth's age. Then find a spot for your birthday, and for today.
