What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can two fossils be the same age and look different?
The Big Idea
Two fossils can be the very same age, and look totally different! Age tells us when an animal lived. Shape tells us who it was, and where it lived. Let's keep 'when' and 'where' on separate labels.
Step 1
Step 1: give each fossil a date. Scientists find out how old the rock layer is, and write the age on a tag. Two fossils can get the very same date, even when they come from far apart.
Step 2
Step 2: note the place where each one lived. One fossil comes from a swamp, and the other was found on a dry hill, where the land is different. Different homes need different bodies, like fins for water, or legs for climbing.
Step 3
Step 3: compare shapes to learn who they were. The shape shows the kind of animal, and how it lived. So the same age can hold many different kinds of life, all at once. Today, whales and butterflies share the same year!
A Closer Look
Here are two fossils from the very same age. On the left is a fish from a swamp. On the right is a spiral shell that was found on a hill. The 'same date' tag says when. The shapes say who and where.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Two animals alive today, like a shark and a lizard, share the same year but not the same shape. Scientists say 'about the same age' when the dates overlap. Always label each fossil with when and where. Age is a clock. Shape is a clue about life.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Ask: what could a fossil's shape tell you about its home? And ask: why does a date alone not tell the whole story? Try it at home: pick 2 animals in your yard or a book. Say when they live, and where they live.
Outro
Same age doesn't mean same shape. Keep asking when, where, and who! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
