Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does your body have rhythms?
The Big Idea
Your heart goes thump, thump, thump. Your lungs breathe in and out. And you get sleepy at night, and wake up in the morning. Your body is full of tiny clocks, called rhythms!
Step 1
Step 1: light hits your eyes. Bright daylight is a signal, telling your body it's time to be awake. Scientists think this is a big cue for your body clock.
Step 2
Step 2: the brain updates the timer. Deep inside your brain, a tiny group of cells acts like a master clock. It uses the light signal to keep your body on time.
Step 3
Step 3: sleep and wake shift, while heart and breath keep cycling. You get sleepy when it's dark, and wake up when it's light. Your heart and lungs cycle all day and night, and a new morning resets the clock.
A Closer Look
Let's look at some of your body clocks. Your brain has a master timer. Your sleep follows day and night. And your heartbeat keeps a steady rhythm.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Jet lag is your body clock arguing with a new sky. Cells keep time with light, meals, and built-in timers. A kid's resting heart beats about 70 to 110 times a minute. This is for wonder, not a checkup. Ask a doctor about health worries.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Ask: why does a late night make the morning hard? And ask: what outside cue helps a body clock? Try it at home: put two fingers on your neck or wrist, and feel your pulse. Count the beats for 15 seconds. Then jump 10 times and count again!
