Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can't we wear a clock for deep time?

The Big Idea

A wristwatch is great for counting hours and minutes. But mountains and fossils are millions of years old! Different jobs need different clocks, and science has a whole toolbox of them.

Step 1

Step 1: ask how long the span is. First, scientists ask how much time they want to measure. A school day is hours. A canyon took millions of years.

Step 2

Step 2: pick a clock that lasts. A wristwatch battery lasts a few years. It can't time a canyon. So scientists choose clocks that last a very long time.

Step 3

Step 3: read layers or atoms. Rock layers pile up slowly, so lower layers are usually older. And some atoms slowly change over millions of years. Scientists use them like tiny clocks.

A Closer Look

Here are three different clocks. A wristwatch counts hours, and is perfect for dinner time. Rock layers count long stretches of time. And atoms tick over millions of years. Each one is the right tool for its job.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists own a toolbox of clocks, not just one watch. Rock layers, fossils, and atoms can all help date the past. Millions of years is a window, and it's still a real measurement. Your watch isn't broken. It's just the wrong tool for a canyon!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask: why would a birthday cake be a bad mountain clock? And ask: what clock is right for a school day? Try it at home: list three things you can time. Pick the best clock for each one, like a stopwatch or a calendar.

Every kind of time needs its own kind of clock, from seconds to millions of years! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
