Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do tree rings count years?
The Big Idea
Look at a tree stump. Do you see circles inside? Many trees add one new ring for each year of growing. So if you count the rings, you can count how many years the tree lived!
Step 1
Step 1: a tree grows. Under the bark, a thin layer of the tree grows new wood, every growing season. That makes the trunk a little wider each year.
Step 2
Step 2: a ring is added. Wood that grows fast in spring is light. Wood that grows slowly in summer is darker. One light band plus one dark band makes one ring, and one year.
Step 3
Step 3: hard years make thin rings. In a good year with lots of rain, a tree grows a wide ring. In a dry or cold year, the ring is thin. So rings also tell us about old weather!
A Closer Look
Let's look closely at a slice of a tree. In the middle is the center, where the tree started. A wide, light ring means a good growing year. A thin, dark ring means a hard year. And the rough outside is the bark.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Many trees add one ring each year, but a few tropical trees don't. Scientists take a thin core with a special tool, so the tree stays alive. Rings can show droughts, cold snaps, and even long-ago fires. Never cut a living park tree to count rings. Look at fallen wood or museum slices.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Ask: what could a thin ring mean? And ask: why do two trees nearby often match? Try it at home: find a picture of a tree slice. Count the rings, and find the thinnest one.
Outro
A tree keeps a diary in its rings, one page for every year! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
