What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are there time zones?
The Big Idea
Noon is when the Sun is highest in the sky where you stand. But Earth is round, so the Sun can't be highest everywhere at once! So we split the world into time zones, to keep clocks close to the local Sun.
Step 1
Step 1: the Sun is high in one place, and that place calls it noon. When the Sun is at its highest, people there say it's 12 o'clock. That's their local noon.
Step 2
Step 2: farther west, the Sun is still lower. Earth spins toward the east, so noon reaches places one after another, like a slow wave. A city farther west has to wait longer for its noon.
Step 3
Step 3: clocks shift by agreement. People agreed to slice Earth into zones. Everyone in one zone uses the same time. That's why phone calls cross zones: your morning may be a cousin's evening.
A Closer Look
Here's Earth with zone lines. The white lines cut Earth into slices. In the noon city, the Sun is highest. In a later city, farther east, the clock says a later time. Each slice keeps its own time.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! You can call a friend in tomorrow, if they live far enough east! Earth has 24 main time zones, one for each hour of the spin. A neighbor's noon is honest for their own sky. After a long trip, feeling tired is zones plus sleepiness, not a broken body clock forever.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Ask: why can it be breakfast for you and dinner for a cousin? And ask: what would one world clock do to lunchtime? Try it at home: pick a far-away city. Look up what time it is there right now.
