What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do we count years?
The Big Idea
A year is one trip around the Sun! Earth takes about 365 days to go all the way around. Counting these trips helps people plan harvests, holidays, and birthdays.
Step 1
Step 1: Earth orbits the Sun. Earth moves in a big loop around the Sun, and it never stops. One full trip takes about 365 days. That's one year.
Step 2
Step 2: the seasons repeat. As Earth goes around, we get spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Then the whole pattern starts again. It's a loop!
Step 3
Step 3: people mark the loop, and add a number. Long ago, people scratched marks on stones and sticks, to count days and seasons. Later they added numbers to years, and that's how history gets a ruler.
A Closer Look
Let's look at Earth's trip. The white loop is the orbit. Each spot on the loop is a different season. A calendar counts the days along the way. And every time Earth gets back to the start, it's a birthday!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Your age is how many trips around the Sun you've ridden. Earth speeds along its orbit at over 100,000 kilometers an hour! Different cultures start their year on different days. Years measure time. They don't judge you!
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Ask: what would repeat if Earth did not orbit the Sun? And ask: why is a birthday an orbit party? Try it at home: walk around a lamp in a circle. That's one orbit. How old are you in trips?
