Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do scientists use microscopes on old dirt?

The Big Idea

Old dirt might look boring, but it's a tiny archive! Hidden inside are specks of pollen, ash, charcoal, and even tiny bits of bone. A microscope makes those tiny clues big enough to see.

Step 1

Step 1: bag a labeled sample. Scientists scoop a small amount of dirt into a bag, and write exactly where it came from. A label first, so nothing gets mixed up!

Step 2

Step 2: sift it, and put the tiny pieces on a slide. A sieve, like a strainer, catches the big bits and lets the tiny ones through. Then scientists place a few specks on a glass slide, and slide it under the microscope.

Step 3

Step 3: name what you can, and add it to the site's story. Pollen shows which plants grew nearby. Charcoal and ash show a fire. Then it all goes in the notebook, to add to the site's story.

A Closer Look

Let's peek at old dirt on a slide. These spiky yellow bits are pollen from plants. The black pieces are charcoal, from a long-ago fire. Gray specks are ash. All of it sits on a thin glass slide.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A pinch of mud can remember a whole forest. Pollen can show which plants grew there, and even which season it was. Charcoal and ash are a record of fires. Lab dirt is bagged and labeled. Backyard dirt is for gardens!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask: what plant clue can pollen give that a big bone cannot? And ask: why label the bag first? Try it at home: sprinkle salt and pepper on a plate. Use a magnifying glass and count how many kinds of specks you can see.
