Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can a single tooth be enough?

The Big Idea

Sometimes a scientist finds just one tooth, and nothing else. That can be enough for a good guess! A tooth is a tool that an animal used every single day, and tools leave signatures.

Step 1

Step 1: compare the shape. Sharp, pointy teeth are made for slicing meat. Flat, ridged teeth are made for grinding plants. So the shape gives a hint about what the animal ate.

Step 2

Step 2: check the size. A really big tooth usually belongs to a big animal, and a tiny tooth to a small one. Scientists measure it carefully, with a ruler.

Step 3

Step 3: read the wear, and match a known group. Worn-down spots show how the animal chewed. Then scientists compare with teeth they already know. A match helps them make a careful guess.

A Closer Look

Let's look closely at a tooth. The cusp is the top peak, or bump, of the tooth. A wear facet is a flat, worn-down spot from chewing. And a comparison tooth is one that scientists already know. Matching them gives a good guess!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Teeth are tough. They're often the best-preserved part of an animal. One tooth can help name a group of animals, and hint at its diet. Scientists think a good guess is not the same as knowing everything. If you find a tooth in the field, leave it and take photos only.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask: what can wear tell you that shape cannot? And ask: why do scientists still hunt for more bones? Try it at home: look at your own teeth in a mirror. Which ones are pointy, and which ones are flat? What are they for?

Outro

One tooth can say a lot, and more bones can say even more! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
