Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DO SCIENTISTS CHANGE THEIR MINDS?

The Big Idea

Have you ever changed your mind after learning something new? Scientists do it too, and that's a good thing. A good scientist follows the evidence, not last year's answer. When new clues arrive, the story can change.

Step 1

Number one: an idea is in use. At any time, scientists use the best idea they have. It's based on the clues they've found so far.

Step 2

Number two: a new clue arrives. Then someone finds a new fossil, or builds a better tool, or runs a new test. Sometimes the new clue doesn't fit the old idea.

Step 3

Number three: the story is revised. Scientists test the old idea. If it fails, they update the story. And they keep notes on the old idea too, so everyone can see how thinking changed.

A Closer Look

Let's see how an idea changes. First is the old model, which a new test showed was wrong. Then a new fossil shows up. And the revised chart tells the updated story.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists once thought many dinosaurs were slow, lizard-like animals. New fossils showed that many were quick and active. Changing your mind in public takes courage. It's a skill. But the new idea still needs clues. Scientists don't flip-flop for fun. When we say scientists used to think, it means the method is working!

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Think of something you believed when you were little, and then learned was different. What clue changed your mind? Next, ask why scientists save the old idea in their notes. How could that help others?

Changing your mind because of good evidence is what great scientists do! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
