What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DOES 'WE DON'T KNOW YET' COUNT AS AN ANSWER?
The Big Idea
Sometimes the best answer a scientist can give is, we don't know yet. That's honest. A made-up answer might sound nice, but it could be wrong. Saying not yet keeps the door open for the next test. And it's how many discoveries begin! Even great scientists say it all the time, and then they go find out!
Step 1
Number one: a question appears. You might wonder how a dinosaur sounded, or what a lost tool was for. Wondering is how science starts.
Step 2
Number two: the clues are too thin. Maybe there are only a few clues, or they don't agree. Then a careful scientist says, we can't be sure yet, and writes the gap down.
Step 3
Number three: a test is planned. Not yet isn't a shrug. It comes with a plan for how to find out. Later, new data may fill the gap, like the last piece of a puzzle.
A Closer Look
Let's peek inside the not-yet box. First, there's an open question. Then, there are clues that are still thin. Next comes a test plan. And someday, a later find may answer the question!
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Science is a pile of checked ideas plus a list of open questions. Whole careers begin with a not-yet question. A made-up answer can send people the wrong way, so a gap is better. It's okay for anyone to say: we don't know yet, so let's look it up together! Being honest about the gaps helps everyone trust the science.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Pick something you don't know, like how many stars are in the sky. Say it out loud: we don't know yet! Then ask, why is a fake answer worse than a gap? And what turns not yet into a project? Great scientists love a good open question.
