Intro
Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY ARE HANDPRINTS IN CAVES A CLUE?
The Big Idea
Some cave walls are covered with handprints, made thousands of years ago. A handprint says one thing very clearly: a person was here! It's like a signature without a name. Let's see how it becomes a clue.
Step 1
Number one: a hand is placed. A person held a hand flat against the cave wall. That was the first step in leaving a mark.
Step 2
Number two: color is blown. Then the artist blew or brushed red or dark paint all around the hand. The hand blocked the paint, so the wall stayed bare underneath.
Step 3
Number three: the shape stays. When the hand moved away, a stencil was left on the rock. That's a hand-shaped picture that can last for thousands of years!
A Closer Look
Let's read some handprints like a scientist. The stencil shows the shape of a real hand. A small hand next to a big hand might mean a child and a grown-up. And where the hand was placed can also be a clue, because the artist chose that spot.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some hand stencils in caves are more than 40,000 years old! Some walls have many hands, like a group photo in stone. Scientists think artists may have used hollow bones to blow paint. And never touch real cave art. Skin oils can damage it.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, make a paper handprint stencil at home. Never on a real cave wall! Place your hand on paper and trace around it. Compare a small hand to a big hand. What can size tell you? And why is the place part of the clue?
