Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DID PEOPLE PAINT ON CAVE WALLS?

The Big Idea

Deep inside some caves, there are paintings of animals and hands, made by people long, long ago. Why did they paint them? Scientists aren't sure. Maybe to tell stories, to teach, or to remember. A painted wall can keep a message safe, even after the voices are gone.

Step 1

Number one: color is ground. Artists crushed colorful rocks, like red ochre, into a fine powder. Mixed with water or fat, the powder became paint.

Step 2

Number two: the wall is marked. Painters used fingers, brushes, and even sprayed paint through a hollow bone. Animals like bison and horses were popular, and so were handprints.

Step 3

Number three: the cave keeps it. Caves stay dark and steady, without much sun, wind, or rain. So some paintings have lasted for tens of thousands of years!

A Closer Look

Let's peek inside a painted cave. The cave wall is the canvas. The reddish color is ochre, from crushed rock. And the animal outline may tell a story about animals that people knew well.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some cave paintings are more than 40,000 years old! Artists often painted animals like bison, horses, and deer. In the dark, artists worked by the light of torches or small stone lamps. Real cave art is fragile, so visitors look with a guide and never touch.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! First, look at a photo of a cave painting with a grown-up. What do you think the painting shows? Take turns guessing. Then ask, what can a picture teach that a tool cannot? And why would touching a painting be a loss for everyone?
