Intro

Hi! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. WHY DID PEOPLE START COOKING FOOD?

The Big Idea

Try chewing a raw, hard root. It's tough work! Long ago, people found that heat changes food. Cooking makes it softer, safer, and easier to digest. It's a little bit of chemistry, with just a flame and some patience!

Step 1

Number one: heat softens tough bits. Heat changes the stuff inside food, like the fibers in meat and the starch in roots. That makes it soft and much easier to chew.

Step 2

Number two: heat makes food safer. Some food carries tiny germs that can make us sick. Cooking kills many of them. That's why cooked food is safer, especially meat.

Step 3

Number three: more energy from a meal. Cooked food is easier for our bodies to break down. So people could get more energy from the same food, and spend less time chewing!

A Closer Look

Let's see what cooking does, from start to finish. First, we begin with something raw and tough, like a root. Then heat from the fire goes to work. And out comes soft, warm food that's ready to share!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Scientists think people began cooking a very long time ago, maybe hundreds of thousands of years. Early cooks didn't always have pots. They used hot coals, hot stones, and flames. A cooked root can give a body more energy than a raw one. But never taste wild plants unless an expert grown-up says it's safe.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up in the kitchen, watch a carrot before and after it's cooked. Does the color change? Does it feel softer? Then ask, what else does heat change besides taste? And why is sharing a meal part of the invention?

Outro

Cooking turned tough food into a soft, safe meal, and that helped people thrive! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
